Wayne Parnell undergoing tests after leaving the cricket field while playing for Kent in a domestic one-day game

South Africa quick Wayne Parnell is undergoing tests on his heart after suffering a scare during a domestic one-day game in England.

Playing in the United Kingdom as the overseas player for county side Kent, Parnell left the field during the 50-over match against Somerset at Taunton on Tuesday after experiencing chest tightness and an abnormally fast pulse, according to The Times.

"Wayne left the field during Tuesday's match at Taunton, as he was feeling unwell,” a Kent spokersperson told SuperSport.

“He wanted to return to the field after examination by the club's medical staff, but did not as a precaution.

"In consultation with doctors at Cricket South Africa, Wayne will receive further check-ups.”

Quick Single: Bairstow's 174 sends selectors a message

Parnell had earlier struck 11 off five balls and taken 1-25 opening the bowling.

He has a history of heart-related issues, spending two nights in hospital after leaving the field in a similar incident playing for South Africa A against India A in 2013, and was found to have an irregular heartbeat.

South Africa, the International Cricket Council’s top-ranked one-day international side, will be sweating on the results of Parnell’s tests, having named him in their squad for next month’s Champions Trophy the UK.

The left-armer is in line to open the bowling for the Proteas at the showpiece ODI tournament, with skipper AB de Villiers suggesting one of the Proteas major strengths is their flexibility.

"We've bowled teams out consistently,” de Villiers said in March.

“Even though we don't have four or five seamers all around 145kph, we have a variety of seamers, who can bowl really well together with Imran Tahir, who is a strike bowler in his own right.

"There's a very nice mix of control, pace, aggression and a bit of calmness, which makes it very nice for me to captain the side."

South Africa are also playing England in a three-match ODI series prior to the Champions Trophy.
