'He reminds me of Kohli': Lyon

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon believes there's shades of India captain Virat Kohli in Sabbir Rahman after the fiery Bangladeshi struck an aggressive half-century on day one of the second Test.

While Kohli grated with Australia during their four-Test series earlier this year, Lyon undoubtedly meant the comparison as a compliment, praising Sabbir's "brave" approach in helping to salvage Bangladesh's first innings.

The combative Sabbir, who admitted he gave as he good as got after copping some sledging from the visitors, helped the hosts recover from 5-117 with a fighting knock of 66 from No.7.

"He's a good player, he reminds me of Virat Kohli," said Lyon, who had the right-hander stumped when he overbalanced playing a pull shot.

"(Kohli) is probably a pretty good role model to have in the subcontinent. That's only on (Sabbir’s) persona out there and the way he walks around the crease and the shots he's played here. 

"We find (Sabbir) doesn't really want to defend, he wants to take the game on and that's brave cricket. 

"He batted pretty well today. He played some nice shots. He was lucky here and there but you need a bit of luck in cricket. 

"I had a bit of luck today with the stumping, it probably wasn't the best ball I've ever bowled in Test cricket.

"He's a good cricketer, we're definitely paying him a lot of respect that's for sure."

Sabbir made his Test debut against England in October last year, notching an impressive fourth-innings half-century before being left stranded on 64 not out with Bangladesh 22 runs shy of victory.

That knock remained his highest score until today as the 25-year-old put on 105 runs with captain Mushfiqur Rahim in a crucial sixth-wicket stand to halt Australia's charge.

Having raced to 50 off only 62 deliveries, he slowed up after the milestone and managed 16 off his next 51 balls before falling (almost literally) to Lyon, who claimed 5-77, in the final session.

Sabbir accepted the Australian's praise and said he hoped to match the feats of Kohli. 

"First of all, Lyon is a great bowler," said Sabbir. "I congratulate him on taking five wickets. 

"I can become a batsman like Virat Kohli, everything is possible. 

"But contributing to the team is more important than being compared to someone else."

But if Sabbir keeps improving with the bat, his willingness to give the odd word back to opposing sides will likely see his association with the India skipper brought up again.  

"I sledge at them because they do it too," Sabbir said of Australia. "I like to sledge when I am batting too, I enjoy it."
