'Freak' Bryant all set to tee off

Aussie U19s excitement machine about to be unleashed in one-day series against Sri Lanka

Australia Under 19s batsman Max Bryant spent half an hour at training on Wednesday in the middle of Kingston Twin Ovals.

Just popping balls over the long-off and long-on boundaries.

For fun.

And after missing out on selection for the three-day match which concluded on Monday, the Queensland Bulls rookie will get his opportunity to shine in the coming days, with the first two one-day matches on Thursday and Saturday.

Aussie U19s excited for one-day series: Sangha

"Max Bryant is a freak," Australia Under 19s co-captain Jason Sangha said today.

"He's the type of guy who can get you 100 off only 40 or 50 balls."

A right-handed opening batsman, the 18-year-old is a powerful striker of the ball – highlighted by his 140 off just 75 deliveries for Queensland at last summer's Under-19 championships, and a knock of 141 off 93 balls at the Under-17 championships the year prior.

Bryant and New South Wales allrounder Austin Waugh are in contention to make their U19 international debuts on Thursday, as the Australians look to build on their strong start to the series.

Quick Single: U19s carry confidence into one-dayers

Just three wickets shy of sealing an improbable victory in the three-day match, Sangha believes the Australians will enter with confidence and a similar attacking mindset.

"The boys played really well and we fought so hard throughout the whole three days," Sangha said.

"Now we turn our attention to the ODI Series, which will be good fun.

"I think we still keep being the same attacking team that we usually are.

Zak Attack: Evans claims three to stall Lankans

"We saw how quick Zak Evans was bowling last game, and everyone's been bowling really well.

"Maybe our plans might be a little bit different now that we know what the Sri Lankan guys are like, (but) our plans won't change too much … hopefully we end up getting the win."

Sangha could get his chance to captain his country for the first time, as could fellow co-captain Param Uppal.

The NSW Blues and Sydney Thunder rookie says regardless of who leads the side, the approach will remain the same.

Quick Single: Zak attack brings shades of Patto

"Us three are working really closely together, making sure how we go about our plans and our strategies with the bat and the ball (is similar)," Sangha said.

"I'm really lucky that I've got those two guys by my side (Uppal and Will Sutherland), and for Param and I, it's a great opportunity for us."

Play begins at 9.30am local time Thursday.
