Tigers cut ex-Ponting medallist Gulbis

Allrounder cut loose by Tasmania, alongside Triffitt, Rose and Willis

Two years after being named Tasmanian cricket's best, Evan Gulbis is among four casualties from the Tigers' contract list for the 2016-17 Shield season.

Gulbis was named the Ricky Ponting Medallist in April 2014 after a stellar 2013-14 summer, which culminated in him making the highest score by a No.8 batsman in Sheffield Shield history – 229no against South Australia.

The Tigers went on to win that match – their last of the Shield season – with Gulbis adding the figures of 4-7 to his record-breaking knock with the bat.

Despite taking the gloves regularly for this season, Tom Triffitt was also among those axed, along with spinner Clive Rose and Sean Willis.

"On behalf of the playing group and Cricket Tasmania we thank them for their contribution," Cricket Tasmania General Manager Andrew Dykes said.

Dykes said the four remaining contracted players would be announced by Friday.

Gulbis, who turned 30 last month, has scored a century and two fifties in averaging 24 in 20 first-class matches, as well as taking 57 wickets at 31.

The allrounder joined Melbourne Stars ahead of last summer's KFC Big Bash League and claimed a slice of history in that competition too, becoming the first No.7 batsman to score a half-century in the Stars' loss to Brisbane Heat.

The Tigers last month announced the re-signing of coach Dan Marsh, and after finishing the Shield season in last place, Dykes forewarned of change among playing personnel.

"It's been no secret we haven't performed as well as we would have liked, but we're looking forward to next season and working further with the players that have had a chance this season – the younger players – and topping up with one or two players from either locally or interstate," he told reporters.

"I won't speculate on who is required and who isn't. We've got to do what's the best thing for Tasmanian cricket going forward ... so it's going to be a tough decision."
