Fit-again Finch won't play Shield

Opener to fly to South Africa next Sunday but won't be bit-part player for Bushrangers this week

Australia T20 batsman Aaron Finch will travel to South Africa this weekend without any cricket under his belt after Victoria opted against selecting him for only the opening two days of their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania this week.

Finch, who hasn't played since injuring his hamstring last month, joins Bushrangers teammates Glenn Maxwell and John Hastings in missing the match and then flying to South Africa for Australia's T20 series against the Proteas.

The 29-year-old has been training hard at the MCG since suffering the injury against India on January 29 and is confident of being fully fit for the ICC World T20 in India, starting in March.

National selector Rod Marsh said earlier this month that, ideally, Finch and fellow injured T20 squad members James Faulkner and Nathan Coulter-Nile would play some form of cricket before Australia's squad departs for South Africa.

While Victoria confirmed Finch is fit and available for the SA tour, they have opted not to pick him - along with Hastings and Maxwell - for the match against the Tigers in Hobart, starting on Thursday.

With Australia set to fly out from Sydney to South Africa on Sunday, the Victorian trio was only available for the opening two days of the Shield match, at which point they would have been withdrawn and replaced.

While Finch will not play this week, Coulter-Nile is expected to turn out for Western Australia in their match against Queensland in Perth.

Coulter-Nile is available for all four days of the Shield match, with Perth's closer proximity to South Africa meaning a later departure time than players on the eastern seaboard.

The right-armer returned to WA Premier Cricket on Saturday for his first match since injuring his shoulder in December, taking 1-37 and bowling 12 overs for Subiaco-Floreat.

The 28-year-old bowled three four-over spells and reported "no issues" with his shoulder, but doesn’t expect to take on a significant workload against the Bulls.

"I doubt there will be long spells, I never bowl long spells anyway so probably four or five over bursts," Coulter-Nile told News Corp.

"The shoulder feels all right, there were no issues.

Quick Single: Second Test, day three report

"I'll have to start fielding with a bit more intensity before the Shield game, but I'm sure that will come."

Tasmania will announce on Wednesday whether or not Faulkner has been included for the first two days of the match against the Bushrangers.

The Vics will also be without opener Rob Quiney (calf) for the match against the Tigers, while veteran paceman Clint McKay has been omitted from the side that beat South Australia last week.

The Bushrangers have brought veteran Cameron White, spinner Jon Holland and wicketkeeper-batsman Aaron Ayre into their squad.

"Cameron White gives us another experienced option in the batting order and has been unlucky not to play more games recently," said Chairman of Selectors Andrew Lynch.

" ... Ayre impressed with a century against a strong NSW bowling attack in the Futures League last month.

"Jon Holland was our best bowler in the Matador Cup and we will look to him to continue that form against Tasmania should he be in the final XI."
