Rashid benefits from Warne advice

Australia legend caught up with England leg-spinner Rashid ahead of Sri Lanka ODI series

England leg-spinner Adil Rashid credits a chat with Australia legend Shane Warne for his brilliant display with the ball in his team’s second ODI thrashing of Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.

After a tight display went without reward in the opening match at Trent Bridge, Rashid captured 2-34 from his 10 overs as England restricted the tourists to 7-254 on Friday.

Quick single: Head to put English experience first

"Before the game at Notts, I just had a general chat with him about leg spin. He gives me his tips," Rashid said.

"He just turned up there and it was having a catch-up. It was good to see him and good for him to give me a few tips, which was helpful.

"It is about the basics and keeping it simple and bowling the same ball – ball after ball after ball – then the natural variation will take place with the hand or the pitch.

"So it is just about that mindset – the positive mindset. It was not really a technical thing, it was more about keeping it simple.

"I am getting better mentally, but you can always have a bad day, or a bad game, or series."

The pair first crossed paths in the United Arab Emirates last year, when England coach Trevor Bayless invited Warne to take a look at Rashid during their tour against Pakistan.

At the time, Warne said he had been impressed with Rashid after the leg-spinners trained together in Sharjah, saying he had seen "glimpses of magic" in in the Englishman.

"There were a few messages (I gave to him) but the overriding thing is that he’s a wonderful bowler," Warne said at the time.

"When anyone first starts their Test career, it takes time to see the best of them. What we’ve seen already from Rashid are some glimpses of magic. All of us need to be a little bit patient with him and he needs to be patient, too."

Quick single: Burns keeping a lid on fielding role

Meanwhile, James Anderson is optimistic he will be fit for England’s first Test against Pakistan at Lord’s next month, after revealing he was suffering from a stress fracture in his bowling shoulder.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed Anderson will now miss Lancashire’s County Championship match against Nottinghamshire early next month – what was meant to be his sole red-ball warm-up ahead of the first Test. It leaves him facing a race against time to be fit to play Pakistan.
