SA collapse hands Vics the momentum

Victoria need 165 more runs to win their Sheffield Shield cricket clash with South Australia, after they sparked a stunning Redbacks collapse late on day three.

Left-arm spinner Jon Holland snared 4-25 and Marcus Stoinis took 3-45 as SA were dismissed for 162 to squander their first-innings advantage.

Bushrangers' openers Travis Dean and Marcus Harris then batted through 11 overs to have their side 0-36 at stumps, chasing 201 for the win.

The competition leaders have gradually prised the advantage away from second-placed SA in a rematch of last year's Shield final, after the Redbacks looked in control when they ended day one at 5-360.

When Holland, who made his Test debut on Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in August, was brought on for the first time in SA's second innings after 33 overs, they were 3-104.

They lost 7-55 in 13.3 overs.

There were two contentious lbw decisions that went Stoinis' way, with Callum Ferguson clearly upset before tea when he was given out for 24, his highest score in seven innings as his slump continues.

Tom Cooper was also given out lbw for one, with the umpire ruling that the ball struck his pad and then the bat.

Cooper's dismissal was the second of a disastrous middle-order collapse where SA lost 4-10, sparked by Holland bowling Jake Lehmann for 28 with a peach that spun back sharply.

The Redbacks went from 3-107 to 7-117, with Holland taking three of the wickets.

Captain Travis Head, who top-scored with 130 in the first innings, also led the way in the second with 52 but he too was undone by a beauty from Holland.

Earlier on Monday, Victoria's tail wagged to restrict their first-innings damage.

Resuming at 6-263, they were dismissed at lunch for 367 to give SA a 38-run lead.

Young wicketkeeper Sam Harper made 80 and Tremain contributed 20, while a last-wicket stand of 48 between Scott Boland (30) and Holland (28no) further fattened the total.

Joe Mennie was the best of the SA attack, taking 4-67.

The Victorian bowlers then restricted SA to 3-70 at tea ahead of the collapse.

Aaron Finch pulled off a spectacular run out for the second wicket.

He initially mis-fielded the ball at mid-wicket, but wheeled around and hit the stumps at the batsman's end from nearly side-on to catch Jake Weatherald short of his ground for eight.
