McCullum passes milestone, farewells Auckland

Kiwis skipper goes past 6000 ODI runs in his final match at Eden Park

Outgoing Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum has become the third New Zealander to score more than 6,000 ODI runs during a typically brisk 44 in his final innings at Eden Park.

McCullum lost the toss and the Kiwis were sent into bat, with the skipper smashing 6, 4, 4, 6 from the final four balls of the third over, bowled by Josh Hazlewood, to kick-start the hosts' innings.

Quick Single: Scorecard - New Zealand v Australia

With the first ball of the 10th over he moved to 36 and, more significantly, into exclusive company among New Zealanders – his 6,000th ODI run surpassed only by Stephen Fleming (8,037) and Nathan Astle (7,090) among his countrymen.

Eventually out for 44 from 29 deliveries, McCullum has posted 6,008 runs in his 258-match ODI career, with two fixtures remaining against the Australians in this current Chappell-Hadlee series to build upon that record.

Quick Single: Smith wants swinging balls, straight bats

It's a total bettered by only by five current players: Tillakaratne Dilshan (10,216), MS Dhoni (8,918), AB de Villiers (8,403), Virat Kohli (7,212) and Shoaib Malik (6,129).

West Indian Chris Gayle (9,221) could also be placed in the above category, though his fractious relationship with his the WICB means he hasn't played ODI cricket since last year's World Cup, while South African Hashim Amla is level with McCullum on 6,008 runs.

The New Zealand skipper also hit three maximums – courtesy of a combination of sheer force and short-form ingenuity – to move past Dhoni on the all-time ODI six-hitters list; he now has 194 sixes, placing him fifth in that category.
