We’ve taken a look at the host of records broken on a momentous fourth day in Pakistan’s day-night Test against the West Indies
Spin wizards lead records rout
17 matches for Yasir Shah to take 100 Test wickets, making him the equal second-fastest to reach the milestone. Yasir joins Australians Charlie Turner and Clarrie Grimmett as well as Englishman Sydney Barnes on the list, with Barnes’ countryman George Lohmann (16 Tests) keeping his record as the fastest to Test triple-figures.
Quick Single: Bishoo, Yasir set up thrilling finish
14 days fewer for Yasir to reach the 100-wicket club than rival spinner Ravi Ashwin. Yasir took 726 days from his Test debut to notch the milestone, while India tweaker Ashwin took 740 days. Mitchell Johnson and Graeme Swann share the record for the shortest amount of time to take 100 Test wickets. The pair each took 617 days from their debut, though both reached the mark in their 23rd Test. Yasir, Ashwin, Johnson and Swann are the only four players to notch 100 Test scalps in less than two years. To illustrate how much more Test cricket is played in the modern era, it took Lohmann more than nine years to reach 100 wickets in his 16th Test.
2 fewer games for Yasir to break the Pakistan record for the fastest man to 100 Test wickets, previously held by Saeed Ajmal. The mystery spinner reached the mark in 19 Tests while lethal speedster Waqar Younis and disgraced quick Mohammad Asif were the next fastest Pakistanis to the milestone at 20 Tests.
7 Devendra Bishoo’s remarkable 8-49 in Pakistan’s second innings was the seventh-best Test figures from the 21st century. The West Indian leg-spinner’s return is the best in Test cricket since Stuart Broad took 8-15 in Australia’s first-day Nottingham nightmare last year.
4 Leg-spinners who have taken better Test figures than Bishoo’s in Dubai. His eight-wicket haul is the best return by a wrist-spinner since India great Anil Kumble took all 10 Pakistan wickets in Dehli in 2009. The other three are Abdul Qadir, Subhash Gupte and Arthur Mailey, who all managed nine-wicket hauls during their Test careers.
26 years since a West Indian last took a Test eight-for before Bishoo’s haul on Sunday. Curtly Ambrose was the last Caribbean bowler to record an eight-wicket haul, snaring 8-45 against England in 1990.
40 years since a West Indian took a Test eight-for outside the Caribbean (Michael Holding 8-92 v England at The Oval). Bishoo now owns the best away figures by a West Indian in Test history.
0 bowlers to have taken a Test eight-for in the United Arab Emirates before Bishoo. Ajmal and New Zealand off-spinner Mark Craig previously owned the best figures in Pakistan’s adopted home country, with both notching seven-wicket hauls in the UAE.
456 runs’ difference between Pakistan’s first and second-innings totals, the joint-highest in Test history. After their mammoth 3-579 declared in their first dig, Pakistan were rolled for just 123 in their second innings. Interestingly, the 456-run differential matched the West Indies’ efforts in Mumbai in 2011, where they followed up their first innings 590 with 134 in their second innings in a thrilling draw against India.
16 wickets fell on an eventful fourth day in Dubai, the joint-most in single day’s play in the UAE. It matches the 16 wickets to fall on two separate days of England’s Test series against Pakistan in 2012.
