Bats have Bulls on top in Townsville

Jack Wildermuth is in sight of a ton after Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne posted half-centuries in Qld's Shield clash with WA

Allrounder Jack Wildermuth has a second first-class century in sight, while dumped Test opener Joe Burns has found form in Queensland's Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia in Townsville.

At stumps on Saturday's day one at Tony Ireland Stadium, the Bulls were 6-327 with Wildermuth 89 not out after Burns had earlier fallen for 68.

All eyes were on Burns who was dropped for the third Test in Adelaide against South Africa after amassing 18 runs in his past six knocks.

However, he regained his touch against the Warriors, striking eight fours and a six in his 117-ball knock.

Burns shared a 108-run second-wicket stand with Marnus Labuschagne (79).

WA's Mitch Marsh (2-65) is also trying to make Test selectors take notice.

The dropped Test allrounder had Charlie Hemphrey caught behind for eight with just his seventh ball before trapping Burns in front, sparking a mini-collapse of 3-14.

But, Wildermuth shared a 92-run sixth-wicket stand with stand-in skipper Chris Hartley (33).

Marsh - axed from the national side ahead of the second Test in Hobart - missed last week's Shield clash due to a back injury.

However, he still earned selection in the national one-day squad for next month's three-game series against New Zealand along with Warriors teammate Hilton Cartwright.

Allrounder Cartwright had 0-32 by stumps on day one, while Bulls debutant Sam Truloff  was run out in strange circumstances during the middle session.

Warriors quick Jason Behrendorff (1-27) claimed his 100th Shield wicket when he bowled Sam Heazlett for two to cap the mini-collapse.

WA are without their Test stars, batsmen Adam Voges (concussion) and Shaun Marsh (broken thumb), for the inaugural Shield clash in Townsville but have welcomed back Ashton Agar from injury.

Bulls' Wildermuth has century in sight

The second-last Warriors are yet to claim a win while the fourth-placed Bulls broke their drought last round with a 128-run victory over South Australia at the Gabba.

Queensland have replaced Test batsmen Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw with Hemphrey and Truloff, who was presented with his Bulls cap by former Australia allrounder Andrew Symonds.

Bulls quick Luke Feldman (back) has been replaced by Michael Neser.
