Shane Warne's career by the numbers

1001 - The number of wickets taken by Shane Warne in international cricket, making him one of just two bowlers to have taken more than 1000 in his career, with Muthiah Muralidaran (1347) being the other. Warne achieved the milestone in his very last international match, in the fifth Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2007.

708 – The number of wickets taken by Warne in Test cricket, the second most by anyone in the format behind only Muralidaran (800). Warne was the first bowler ever to reach the 600 and 700 wicket milestones.

37 – The number of five-wicket hauls taken by Warne in Tests, the second most by any bowler and again behind only Muralidaran, who dismissed half the team on a whopping 67 occasions. In addition to that, Warne also has 10 ten-wicket match hauls to his name.

21 – The number of caught and bowled dismissals by Warne, the joint third-most along with Daniel Vettori and behind Anil Kumble and Muralidaran (35).

1761 – The number of maiden overs bowled by Warne in Tests, the second most by a bowler in Tests, again behind only Muralidaran, who delivered 1794 overs without conceding a run.

8 – The number of wickets taken by Warne against South Africa in Cape Town in 2002, the second most by anyone in his 100th Test. Muralidaran (nine wickets against Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2006) holds the record for best match figures in his 100th Test.

195 – The number of Ashes wickets taken by Warne, easily the most by an individual in the series history and 38 more than the next best Glenn McGrath (157). Warne’s tally of 195 is also the highest by a bowler against one team in Tests.

138 – The number of wickets taken by Warne in the fourth innings of a Test, the most by anyone in history including Muralidaran (106) and his compatriot McGrath (103). Warne’s career best (8-71 against England in Brisbane in 1994) also came in the fourth innings.

102 – The number of times Warne dismissed a batsman for a duck, the joint-second most along with Muralidaran in Tests. McGrath (104) achieved it the most often of any bowler.

96 – The number wickets taken by Warne in Tests in 2005, the most by a bowler in a calendar year followed by Muralidaran, who bagged 90 wickets in 2006. Warne broke the 24-year-old record of Dennis Lillee, who had taken 85 wickets in 1981.

40 – The number of wickets taken by Warne in the 2005 Ashes, the second most by a bowler in a five-match Ashes series behind only Jim Laker (49 wickets in 1956).

1440 – The number of days taken by Warne to reach 200 wickets in Tests, the quickest bowler in history to the milestone. Warne made his debut on January 2, 1992 and completed the double century of wickets on December 11, 1995.

2196 – The number of days taken by Warne to reach 300 wickets in Tests, again the quickest in history to the milestone, passing the 300 wicket mark on January 5, 1998.

28 – Warne's age (28 years and 114 days) at the time of taking his 300th wicket in Tests, making him the second youngest to a milestone that has been reached by 30 bowlers. The youngest of all is India’s Kapil Dev, who reached the mark a day after his 28th birthday.

125 – The number of catches taken by Warne in Tests, making him just the second player after Ian Botham to have a career double of 100 catches and 300 wickets. Botham (120 catches) took 383 wickets compared to Warne’s 708.

17 – The number of man-of-the-match awards earned by Warne in Tests, the equal third-most along with Wasim Akram. Jacques Kallis (23) and Muralidaran (19) lead the way.

3154 – The number of runs scored by Warne in Tests, the most by anyone in history without having scored a century. Warne twice posted scores in the nineties but could not convert either into a hundred; he was famously caught by Mark Richardson off Daniel Vettori for 99 against New Zealand in Perth in 2001 and by Ashley Giles off Simon Jones for 90 in Manchester in 2005.

293 – The number of wickets taken by Warne in one-day internationals, making him the third most prolific Australian behind only Brett Lee (380) and McGrath (381).

373 – The number of boundaries (337 fours and 36 sixes) scored by Warne in Tests, the second most by a tail-ender (batting at number eight or below), just behind Daniel Vettori (454 boundaries - 442 fours and 12 sixes).

34 – The number of ducks posted by Warne in Tests, the fourth most by a batsman behind McGrath (35), Chris Martin (36) and Courtney Walsh (43).

4 – The number of five-wicket hauls taken by Warne in consecutive innings in 2004, the most by any leg-spinner. He took 5-116 and 5-43 in his comeback Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2004 following a 12-month doping ban and then 5-65 and 5-90 in the next Test in Kandy.

4 - The number of wickets taken by Warne in the final of 1999 Cricket World Cup against Pakistan at Lord’s, which earned him the man-of-the-match award. Warne’s figures (4-33) remain the best by any spinner in a World Cup Final. He finished the tournament with 20 wickets, the joint-leading wicket taker along with New Zealand’s Geoff Allott.

3 – The number of leg-spinners to have taken a hat-trick in Tests. Warne, who achieved the feat against England in Melbourne in 1994, sits alongside Jimmy Mathews (twice) and Alok Kapali.
