Thunder snare schoolboy Sangha

Reigning KFC Big Bash League champions Sydney Thunder have snapped up one of Australia's most promising young players, signing teenage batsman Jason Sangha for BBL|06.

The 16-year-old, who comes on board as the Thunder's Community Rookie, is still in high school but has made headlines for his rapid rise over the last year.

Sangha made waves in the Under-19 National Championships as part of the Cricket Australia XI before being selected in Australia’s Under-19 team which met New Zealand and Pakistan earlier this year.

He scored 102 for in his youth ODI debut for the Australia Under 19s, before becoming the youngest player in history to be handed a New South Wales rookie contract in April.

Rated by Cricket Australia National Talent Manager Greg Chappell as one of the top juniors Australia has produced, Sangha also became the youngest player in 90 years to represent NSW in the Toyota Futures League.

"It feels amazing to sign with the Thunder," Sangha said.

"To be part of such an elite bunch, I’m looking forward to working with the guys and hopefully have a good season."

Sangha was part of the Sydney Thunder Academy squad who travelled across the Tasman to play New Zealand side Canterbury Kings earlier this year.

"I really enjoyed playing with the Academy, with (Thunder off-spinner) Chris Green who was our captain,” said Sangha.

"It’s a dream come true to be honest, since watching on TV when I was little I’ve always wanted to be a part of the team and now that I am… It is amazing."

Sydney Thunder’s Director of Cricket Mike Hussey believes Sangha has a bright future in the game.

"Jason has showed his potential with several impressive performances at Under-17 and Under-19 level," Said Hussey.

"He’s a talented batsman who we hope will gain a lot from being a part of the Thunder squad.

"We’re looking to build sustainable success at the Thunder, and Jason is a bright prospect."
