Smith 'disappointed' with umpire decision

Australia captain Steve Smith has refused to stew but admitted he was disappointed with a controversial dismissal in Australia's World Twenty20 loss to India.

Smith was judged caught behind by umpire Marais Erasmus on two at Mohali, having misread Yuvraj Singh's first delivery of the tournament.

The skipper was clearly furious at the time, lingering at the crease before walking off the field while shaking his head.

Replays suggested there was a gap between Smith's blade and the ball.

"It didn't feel like I hit that but that's the game of cricket. I got given out. It was the umpire's call and that was it. It was a bit disappointing," Smith said.

MS Dhoni appealed wildly, clearly convinced he'd heard an edge.

Smith didn't know whether it was a case of guile or optimism from the wicketkeeper.

"I'm not sure, he might have heard something," the 26-year-old said.

"I certainly didn't feel anything.

"It's not the first time and it won't be the last time it happens ... I'm sure it'll happen again in my career so I'm not too worried about it and I'll move on."

Smith and Dhoni will soon link up as Indian Premier League teammates at Rising Pune Supergiants, one of two new franchises entering the competition this year.

The virtual quarter-final was billed as a showdown between Smith and Virat Kohli, two of the best young cricketers in the world.

Smith, coming off an unbeaten 61, which was also the highest score by an Australian at the tournament, felt primed to fire.

Instead it was Kohli who finished 82 not out to be named man of the match.

"I felt pretty good batting against Pakistan the other day," Smith said.

"T20 cricket you can get a bit of momentum and I felt things switched a little bit for me.

"Virat Kohli is an extremely talented and very good player and he has been for a long time ... he played beautifully."
