Taskin's suspension appeal dismissed

Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has failed in his bid to have his bowling suspension overturned for his country's remaining World Twenty20 games against India and New Zealand.

The blow to Bangladesh comes just hours before their Asia Cup final rematch against India in Bangalore. 

The 20-year-old right arm quick had opted for a judicial review of his case amid reports circulating in Bangladesh media that his stock and yorker balls had been found to be legal but some of his bouncers had been delivered with an illegal action.

Taskin and Bangladesh off-spinner Arafat Sunny were both suspended this week for illegal bowling actions, ahead of Bangladesh's match with Australia which the subcontinent side lost.

The duo had been reported for suspected illegal actions following their side's opening match of the WT20 group stage, an eight-run win against the Netherlands in Dharamshala on March 9.

Taskin was assessed at the ICC accredited independent testing facility at the Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai on 15 March, where 'some' of Taskin's standard deliveries were found to exceed the permissible level of elbow extension.

Arafat was also assessed at the same centre. He is understood to have not appealed his suspension.

"Taskin exercised his right to request an expeditious review of his case by a Judicial Commissioner," the ICC confirmed in a statement today.

"The hearing was conducted (Tuesday) by Michael Beloff QC over a tele-conference call that lasted several hours and in which numerous legal challenges were made on behalf of the player.

"Having carefully considered those arguments and the responses of the ICC, Mr Beloff has now notified all parties concerned of his decision that Taskin’s suspension from bowling in international cricket shall be upheld."

Leading Bangladesh barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan, who has worked with the Bangladesh Cricket Board, took to Facebook in the wake of Taskin's suspension to claim there were technicalities in the regulations that meant the fast bowler should not have been suspended.

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathursingha was furious at the timing of the report with the pair having bowled for Bangladesh without issue during the past year, as well as the recent Asia Cup.

"If they have a concern about my bowlers, I have a concern about their (the ICC's) actions as well," Hathurusingha said.

"I don't see anything wrong. They have bowled the same way as the last 12 months.

"If they (the umpires) have officiated the matches they have been playing, they must have seen something different yesterday. That's all I can say."

The Bangladesh team is allowed to replace both bowlers in their squad for the remainder of the event.

Taskin had taken three wickets in four World T20 matches for Bangladesh, Averaging 20.33 with an economy rate of 6.10. Arafat’s two wickets for the tournament came in the defeat to Pakistan in their Super 10 match at Kolkata.
