Boland primed for death bowler role

Scott Boland's bid to become Australian cricket's go-to death bowler will be put to the test when he makes his international debut in Tuesday's one-day clash with India at the WACA Ground.

Australia will field a new-look bowling line-up in the series opener, with Boland and left-arm quick Joel Paris to make their debuts.

Josh Hazlewood, 25, will spearhead the inexperienced attack, with all-rounders Mitch Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, and James Faulkner to add further assistance.

Boland showcased his talents with a match-winning haul of 7-31 in a Sheffield Shield victory by Victoria over WA at the WACA this season.

He has also snared six wickets from four BBL games this summer, and captain Steve Smith is eager to see how the 26-year-old fares on the international stage.

"Having watched him bowl throughout the Matador Cup and the Big Bash, his death bowling has been very impressive," Smith said.

"I think he hits the yorker as well as anyone at the moment, and he's got a bit of pace to him.

"Hopefully he can hurry up the Indian batters a bit.

"He has been impressive in the nets the last couple of weeks. He has hit the bat very hard, bowled good areas, and that's what you need to do out here at the WACA."

In-form batsman Shaun Marsh was unlucky to miss a spot in the final XI, however he may get a berth in the side when opener David Warner takes leave to be present for the birth of his second child.

India were dealt a blow last week when paceman Mohammed Shami was ruled out for the entire five-match series because of a hamstring injury.

Doubt also surrounds the fitness of fellow fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who didn't feature in the recent tour matches against a WA XI side in Perth.
