Australia A captain earns another leadership job, while Siddle is still unavailable for Vics
Handscomb named to captain Victoria
Peter Handscomb has been named Victoria Bushrangers captain for the upcoming Matador One-Day Cup competition, while star quick Peter Siddle is a notable omission.
Handscomb, who recently impressed as an intuitive and tactical leader during the Australia A winter series, takes the reins in place of Matthew Wade, who is on national duties.
Fellow Australia A players Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell also bolster the Bushrangers playing stocks.
"It's another great opportunity for Peter to lead a team in a big tournament," said Victorian Chairman of Selectors Andrew Lynch.
"His experience captaining the Australia A side has been invaluable and I know he's looking forward to the next month."
Quick Single: Five Tigers debutants in Matador Cup squad
Siddle had been working hard in pre-season to recover from back and ankle injuries in time for the tournament, however his absence and that of fellow quicks James Pattinson (back stress fracture), Scott Boland, John Hastings and Chris Tremain (all Australia duties) hands an opportunity to rookie pair Jackson Coleman and Matt Doric.
"Coleman and Doric have shown promising form in both Premier Cricket and Pathway competitions, and will help fill the roles left by our frontline pace attack currently missing through injury and overseas commitments," Lynch added.
Quick Single: Ferguson returns to lead Redbacks
"Add to that a solid mix of young allrounders, as well as experienced campaigners like Glenn Maxwell, Cameron White, Bobby Quiney and Dan Christian, and we're set for a really positive month of cricket."
Maxwell's inclusion comes only a week after it emerged that allrounder had sought a move to New South Wales, but his inclusion is nonetheless a huge positive for the Bushrangers, particularly given his recent T20 form for Australia in Sri Lanka, where he broke records with a century and a half-century in consecutive innings to be the Player of the Series.
Michael Beer is another new addition to the squad, the left-arm spinner adding an extra dimension to the spin attack that fared well during the Matador Cup last year.
Quick Single: Blues name squad for Matador Cup defence
"Beer comes in as a seasoned campaigner, and will really add depth to our spin attack led by Fawad Ahmed and Jon Holland," Lynch said.
"To have those three as well as part-timers Maxwell and White is incredibly beneficial, and leaves us with plenty of options next month."
Emerging batsman Marcus Harris has been named in the squad after representing the Cricket Australia XI at last year's Matador Cup, the first time the team took part in the tournament.
Quick Single: Bulls name new skipper for Matador
The squad departs next Monday, September 26 for practice matches in Perth ahead of the first fixture on October 5 against last year's runners-up South Australia.
