Aussies 'unsettled' by changes: Blewett

National fielding coach discusses heavy opening ODI defeat on Optus Sport's Across the Ditch

Fielding coach Greg Blewett says Australia's batsmen spoke about adapting to new conditions away from home but just weren't good enough in the thumping defeat in Auckland.

The visitors copped a 159-run defeat in a disastrous start to the Chappell-Hadlee series, with the batting order no match for a rampant Black Caps bowling attack.

Speaking to Damien Fleming and Chris Rogers on Optus Sport's Across the Ditch, Blewett admitted his side had been "very poor" as it fell spectacularly short of New Zealand's 307 – the sort of total they've recently had little trouble in overhauling against India on home turf.

"We've generally chased down those sort of totals over the last 12 months quite well so … if we'd batted half decently we probably should have got those runs," Blewett said.

The former Test and ODI batsman admitted extensive team changes over the past year had unsettled the team.

"From the game that we played here (in Auckland) for the World Cup I think we had four players playing today, so it's been a big turnover, and recently the T20s and a little bit of experimentation there with the selection of that squad coming up … there have been lots of guys coming in and out of the side so we're probably not quite settled at the moment.

Quick Single: Lehmann returns from medical lay-off

"We certainly haven't got some of our stronger bowlers … but not taking anything away from the Kiwis, they were very good and we were very poor.

"We know that we're a good side, we play this format very well. We spoke about winning games away from home and adapting to the conditions and we certainly didn't do that with the bat. The wicket did slow up a little bit and we just weren't good enough."
