Stars to come out 'all guns blazing'

Jonassen and co fired up to take consolation win in final T20 against the White Ferns

Allrounder Jess Jonassen says the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars will come out “with all guns blazing” as they seek a confidence-boosting consolation win in the third and final Twenty20 International against New Zealand on Friday.

The White Ferns took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series Tuesday, with Southern Stars coach Matthew Mott saying his team had been "their own worst enemy" with the bat in the first two games.

"We obviously haven't performed as well as we'd hoped in this series, especially in the T20 stuff," Jonassen said on the eve of the third T20 in New Plymouth.

"But for us there's no such thing as a dead runner, any chance to play for our country is something we never take lightly and we'll definitely come out with all guns blazing and look to put a consistent and solid performance on the board leading into India."

The Southern Stars posted totals of 7-113 and 6-116 in the first two matches – both played at Wellington's Basin Reserve – falling to their third consecutive T20 series loss.

"I'm really disappointed. It just seems a little like Groundhog Day with the batting," Mott said after the game.

"We were our own worst enemy with the bat today and cost ourselves big time. We need to turn it around pretty quickly."

Jonassen said Australia would need to back their ability on Friday to regain some much-needed confidence ahead of this month's World T20 in India.

"We've spoken about trying to go back to enjoying it again and backing our ability.

"We have some really talented players in this side and we know that everyone is here for a reason, because they had solid WBBLs.

"We're looking to bring those performances back out and play with a bit of freedom and just enjoy it."

The match is the Southern Stars' final game before they fly to India, where they meet West Indies in a warm-up in Chennai before their campaign begins in earnest against South Africa on March 18.

The third T20 at New Plymouth's Pukekura Park will be streamed live on cricket.com.au and via the Cricket Australia LIVE App from 2pm AEDT.
