Statistics to emerge from the Australia-England ODI opener in Sydney

73.68 – The ODI winning percentage of Australia since January 1, 2014, the most successful team in this period. Australia have also won eight of their last 10 ODIs. On the contrary, England have lost seven of their last 10. England’s winning percentage (34.61) since January 2014 is better than only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe among full members.

10 – Number of times Australian bowlers have taken a wicket on the first ball of the match in One-Day Internationals, the most by any team. Next are Pakistan and West Indies who have each done it on nine occasions. Mitchell Starc became seventh Australian to have this feat when he trapped Ian Bell lbw. The other six Aussies are: Craig McDermott (thrice), Doug Bollinger (twice), Jeff Thomson, Terry Alderman, Nathan Bracken and Brett Lee.

Moreover, Mitchell Starc’s current bowling Strike Rate (25.8) is best among all Aussies who have at least 50 wickets in ODIs. The details are documented here.

5 – Number of times England have lost a wicket on first ball of the ODI. The English batsman before Ian Bell yesterday was Marcus Trescothick, bowled by Shoaib Akhtar’s inswinging yorker at Southampton in 2006.

53 – Number of wickets Mitchell Starc has taken in ODIs, with Bell his 50th victim. Just a week ago, he completed 50 wickets in Tests as well at the same venue when he removed Suresh Raina lbw on 0. Starc (24 years and 351 days) is the fifth-youngest Australian to reach 50 wickets in 50-over international cricket.

78.28 – Eoin Morgan’s batting average in ODIs when playing as captain. He has 548 runs at 78.28 in nine innings (including two centuries) when he leads England. Morgan also became only third England captain to score a hundred in ODIs against Australia. The previous two were Mike Atherton in 1997 and David Gower in 1985. Morgan, 28, also completed 3000 runs in ODIs for England the course of his innings. Overall, he has 3846 runs, 744 coming for his native country and previous team (Ireland).

51.70 – The percentage of Eoin Morgan’s runs in England’s total. The English captain scored 121 of his team’s 234. The remaining 10 batsmen scored only 93 runs while there were 20 extras.

3 – Number of hundreds David Warner has amassed in ODIs. Interestingly, all three have come in tri-series in Australia. Warner scored back-to-back hundreds in the first two finals of the Tri-Series in 2012 against Sri Lanka. After that he went 29 innings without a three-figure score in ODIs. During the course of his 127 against England at SCG, he also passed 1000 runs in Australia.

18 – Number of fours hit by David Warner, the joint-most by an Australian batsman in an ODI innings. Ricky Ponting (against Zimbabwe in 1998) and Andrew Symonds (against Pakistan in 2003) had also hit 18 Fours. The world record of most fours in an innings is 33 by India’s Rohit Sharma, which happened during his magnum-opus 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in 2014.

17.38 – The batting average of Glenn Maxwell at home. He has only 226 runs in 16 ODI innings, and has passed 50 only twice. The duck at the SCG was his fourth consecutive score in single digits in ODIs.
