Tasmania fast bowler Andrew Fekete is the bolter in Australia’s 15-man squad for two-Test tour Qantas Tour of Bangladesh next month.

Fekete and Western Australian opening batsman Cameron Bancroft are the two uncappped players in the touring party.

Queensland pair Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns have earned a recall, as has NSW Blues left-arm orthodox spinner Stephen O’Keefe and Victorian allrounder Glenn Maxwell.

In the absence of the injured David Warner, Adam Voges has been named vice-captain to Steve Smith, who will lead the inexperienced squad that features only 242 Test caps.

Fekete, 30, has played 18 first-class matches and was the second-highest wicket-taker in last seasons’s Sheffield Shield with 37 wickets at 24.10.

The right-armer toured India with Australia A in July, playing in both four-day matches and taking five wickets in spin-friendly conditions.

Fekete is the sole Tasmanian in the squad and will look to make friends fast, starting with his skipper who says he has never met his new fast bowler.

"I haven’t seen a great deal of him to be quite honest," Smith said.

"I heard he bowled extremely well in India for the ‘A’ stuff there and there’s no doubt that the conditions are likely to be quite similar.

"I think he reverses the ball quite well and hopefully that will be one of our strengths that we’ll be able to do well in Bangladesh and he certainly provides that option."

Fekete is one of four fast bowlers in the squad next to Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle and Patrick Cummins, while Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood were not considered for selection with the National Selection Panel opting to rest the pair ahead of the home summer.

Unlike Fekete, 22-year-old Bancroft has three state teammates to welcome him into his first Test squad, and national selector Rod Marsh keen to see the right-hander can do after a stunning Shield season for the Warriors.

"Cameron is a player who impressed everyone on the recent A tour of India,” Marsh said.

"He can bat for long periods of time and scored an outstanding 150 against India A in Chennai.

"On that tour he played spin well, fielded brilliantly at bat-pad and his whole demeanour was that of a player who is determined to play Test cricket.

"He scored almost 900 first-class runs last season, he’s young, hungry and he could become a very good player for us over a long period of time."

Khawaja returns to the Test fold for the first time since the 2013 Ashes, with Bupa Support Staff Head Coach Darren Lehmann saying the classy left-hander was on the cusp of selection last summer after a second-straight prolific one-day campaign with the Bulls.

But a devastating knee injury suffered while training with KFC Big Bash League outfit Sydney Thunder ruled him out for nine months and cruelled his hopes of a Test return last season.

Lehmann says Khawaja is "a lot more advanced" than when Australian fans first met him in January 2011 on Test debut at the SCG, and looks set to get an extended run in the Baggy Green.

"He has to just go and play and let his technique and his results and experience do the rest," Lehmann said.

"He'll get a good run at it. He's been in and out of the side a little bit and only played a few games here and there, but to give him a good run at it and see how he goes would be exciting for the coaching group but also exciting for him and the team.

"If you nail down that spot it will be fantastic for us going forward."

Maxwell’s three Tests have been spread across India (two) and the UAE (one), and he now travels to Bangladesh where his skills as an off-spinning allrounder are set to be an asset once more.

"It seems I’m a bit of a sub-continent specialist at the moment," Maxwell said. "Hopefully I can turn that into just a Test specialist and stay in that squad.

"It’s a place where I want to be and I want to be in all three formats.

"And while I’m hitting the ball really well in one-day cricket I want to take that over into the red-ball stuff and hopefully stay there for a long time."

Maxwell’s form for Australia in their 3-2 one-day international series victory over England was sublime, impressing Smith with his mature stroke play and level head.

"He probably hasn’t premeditated as many shots as he previously had done and played through situations a lot smarter,” Smith said.

"I think that’s great to see him learning and getting better every day.

"He’s had a good couple of years back home in first-class cricket and couple of stints over here in county cricket.

"He’s improving every day so I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes on the spinning wickets as well."

Bangladesh will be Smith’s first tour as the full-time Test captain following Michael Clarke’s retirement after the Ashes last month.

The 26-year-old skipper has already outlined his leadership goals and says reversing his side’s poor record outside Australia is at the top of the list.

Marsh to take lessons from UAE to Bangladesh

"For me, winning away from home is something that I’m looking for," Smith said.

"A lot of the teams around the world have played well at home but haven’t travelled well.

"That’s going to be something we’re going to try to rectify and that starts in Bangladesh.

"One word I’m going to be saying to the boys a lot is 'adapting' and making sure we’re able to adapt to the conditions we are faced with.

"And that’s different whether it be Edgbaston or Lord’s to the MCG or Chittagong.

"Making sure we adapt to the conditions we’re faced with and make sure we’re preparing well for everything we’re going to come up against."

The first Test against Bangladesh is in Chittagong starts on October 9, before the series heads to Dhaka for the second Test from October 17.
