Langer in no rush for Australia's top job

Former Test star Justin Langer insists he's in no rush to take over from Darren Lehmann as Australia's head coach on a permanent basis.

Langer will take charge of the national side in a caretaker capacity for Australia's one-day series against the West Indies and South Africa in June, while Lehmann goes on a break.

Lehmann has previously nominated Langer as his likely successor, but the Perth Scorchers coach says he's happy working in Western Australia and has no immediate plans to move.

After a long career as a player, Langer is enjoying the chance to spend more time with his young family in Perth.

"Timing's an amazing thing. Maybe in a few years' time," Langer said on Monday.

"But at the moment I'm very settled doing what I'm doing.

"You've got to remember that to coach Australia or to play international cricket sounds really glamorous, but I did it for 15 or 16 years.

"It is a great job and I wouldn't change it for the world.

"But it also means you're away from home for 11 months of the year.

"In life, you've got to weigh up all of those things to make sure you get that balance right and ensure you're still happy.

"It's just great to be able to do `Boof' (Lehmann) and Cricket Australia a favour for that tour."

Earlier this year, Langer ruled himself out of contention for the England head coaching role so he could stay with his family in Perth.

He subsequently signed a two-year contract extension with the WACA that tied him to WA cricket until 2017-18.

Lehmann has no immediate plans to retire, with Australia's World Cup defence in 2019 and 2017-18 Ashes at the top of his priority list.

But a handover to Langer could be on the cards after that.

Langer is one of the most respected and well liked figures in Australian cricket, with his strong work ethic and ability to connect with his players making him a perfect candidate to coach Australia.

The 105-Test opener, who retired from international cricket in 2007, has shone since taking the reins of WA at the end of 2012.

The 45-year-old led the Scorchers to back-to-back KFC Big Bash League titles, guided WA to last summer's Matador Cup crown as well as the Sheffield Shield final in the past two seasons.

Although Langer is being talked up as a future Australia coach, he's not letting it get to his head.

"I know how fickle this job is," Langer said.

"We might lose a few games of cricket in the next few months, and they'll forget I even coached West Australia.

"That's just how the business works."

Langer's immediate focus is on guiding the Perth Scorchers to another win in the Big Bash League.

The Scorchers are 1-1 after recording a nine-wicket victory over the Brisbane Heat on Saturday.

Next up is an assignment against the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
