Black Caps thriving on Test momentum

New Zealand allrounder Grant Elliott says he's been buoyed by Test side's winning ways

The Black Caps head into the one-day cricket segment of their tour of England boosted by the energy from their emphatic win in the second Test.

Their limited-overs itinerary begins with a warm-up fixture against Leicestershire starting on Saturday night, four days after they completed a 199-run victory at Headingley to square the two-Test series.

Quick Single: New Zealand secure memorable victory

Among those who have come into the New Zealand squad is allrounder Grant Elliott, who describes the mood in the camp as one of real excitement.

"Probably the best thing about it is the Test match win," he said.

"The guys that played in that have come back with a lot of energy."

New Zealand spun their way to victory at Headingley

Against Leicestershire, Elliott will be up against his county teammates.

He is playing Twenty20 cricket for the Foxes, whom he has helped to two wins in four matches, and will rejoin them after his international duties are over.

After New Zealand's thrilling run in the World Cup in February and March, he said there was plenty of anticipation about getting back into the 50-over format.

"We've been pretty successful at white-ball cricket lately so the boys are looking forward to whacking the white ball around a bit," he said.

Elliott, 36, played some key hands in the World Cup campaign.

The most memorable was his 84 not out against South Africa, completed with a dramatic six off the penultimate ball to carry New Zealand into the final.

The Black Caps' results during the tournament included an eight-wicket demolition of England in Wellington.

Quick Single: Big names left out of England squad

However, Elliott said the Black Caps would be wary of their hosts in the upcoming five-match ODI series and he cited their new-look squad and the home conditions as the reason.

"We can see a lot of players that are going to be pretty motivated to do well against us," he said.

"They'll be motivated not only to keep their place in the team but also to make an impression."
