Patient Pattinson will bide time

Fast bowler says he wants to string together domestic matches before worrying about an international red-ball recall

Victorian fast bowler James Pattinson is not fussed at being overlooked for Australia's Test squad for the first two Tests against New Zealand, saying he is content to focus on his state duties for now.

Pattinson was not included in Australia's 12-man squad for the Commonwealth Bank Tests in Brisbane and Perth, but was included in a bumper 20-man red-ball squad that trained in Sydney last month.

The Victorian returned to the national team for the one-day series in England in September, the first time he'd pulled on Australian colours in 18 months after a long stint of the sidelines due to back and hamstring injuries.

The right-armer also unveiled his new-look bowling action during the series, a method he's adopted over the past year in a bid to stave off any more serious and long-term injuries.

He then impressed with 14 wickets at 19.43 for the Bushrangers during the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup, and further pressed his international claims on Friday when Victoria rattled through Queensland for 103 in the second innings of their Sheffield Shield clash.

He reminded everyone of his abilities by firing out Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja and first-innings top-scorer Scott Henry cheaply, to finish with 3-35.

But for the 25-year-old, stringing together consecutive matches on the domestic scene is currently his primary goal as he opts not to think any further ahead than that.

"At the moment I haven't really thought about playing Test cricket," Pattinson said.

"I'm probably a while off that. I'm just really excited to be playing for Victoria. That's sort of all I wanted to do so far. I haven't thought ahead.

"I'm just really wanting to play some consecutive cricket with Victoria, hopefully without being rested.

"I just want to play cricket and build my body up to play cricket. Over the past two years obviously I haven't been able to do that, with injury, so hopefully I can get a good run at it."

The paceman confirmed he harboured a desire to add to his 13 Test caps – the most recent of which came in March 2014 against South Africa – but he is not concerning himself about when it may happen.

"When you do take the next step you have to be really confident with how you're bowling, and have those performances under your belt to get selected," he said.

"I'll still be doing my best to put my name up for selection for Australia, but at the moment I'm just focused on really trying to win games for Victoria and sort of go back to where I started.

"There's always a lot of talk about 'when are you going to get back in the Test team?' and I'm sort of just trying to forget all that at the moment, because you sort of get caught up in it over the past couple of years."

Instead, Pattinson will have another opportunity to impress for his state when they play NSW at the SCG when the second Sheffield Shield round begins on Friday.

Having Pattinson in his arsenal is particularly pleasing for Bushrangers skipper Matthew Wade, as Victoria aim for back-to-back four-day titles.

"His form in the Matador Cup was awesome. He did exactly what you want any fast bowler to do, come on and take wickets when you needed them," Wade said.

"They were slow wickets and he was still getting the ball through really comfortably.

"He'll be back in the Test team pretty soon, I'm pretty certain of that."
