Hogan out, four in for Warriors

The Alcohol. Think Again Western Warriors have named four new faces in their 2015-16 squad, with veteran paceman Michael Hogan missing out and nephew of former Australian allrounder Tom Moody promoted.

David Moody, William Bosisto, Hilton Cartwright and Matthew Dixon have been awarded senior contracts, while Jhye Richardson, who recently performed well for the Australian U19s against England in their series in Perth, earned a rookie contract alongside Kyle Gardiner, Nicholas Hobson, Joshua Inglis and Liam Connor.

Medium-pacer Moody made his debut for the Warriors in February, taking seven wickets on debut.

The 20-year-old finished with 10 scalps from his three Bupa Sheffield Shield appearances in 2014-15.

Dixon, 22, has experience and pace beyond his years, first selected as an 18-year-old against New South Wales in 2010-11 before signing with the Warriors for 2012-13. He has been on a rookie contract with WA since 2013-14.

Zimbabwean-born allrounder Cartwright made his first class debut in 2013 and has been contracted with the Perth Scorchers for the last three seasons, while 21-year-old batsman Bosisto starred for Australia in the under-19 World Cup in 2012 and made three Shield appearances in 2013-14.

WACA high performance general manager Ben Oliver said the squad had a mix of experienced professionals and some of the best young players in Australia.

“They are all great people and have worked hard to earn respect over the past couple of seasons,” Oliver said.

“As a group, they have performed well and we are looking forward to seeing them develop further over the next 12 months.

 “While there were some very difficult decisions, it is pleasing to see four players elevated to the full list and a further five new local players rewarded with rookie contracts.

“This is a good indicator that club cricket and our talent development programs are working and gives us good reason to be excited about the future of WA cricket.”

Hogan, who is signed with county team Glamorgan but is currently sidelined due to ongoing injury problems, is one of five players not returning from last summer’s squad.

The veteran seamer struggled with hamstring problems in the latter parts of the Warriors’ Sheffield Shield season.

The 33-year-old’s WA career ends after 51 matches, 184 wickets and the record for the most runs (533) scored by a No.11 in Shield history.

Last month, the Warriors announced former Test spinner Michael Beer was one of four players to have been axed by the Warriors for next season, with Ryan Duffield, John Rogers and Craig Simmons also not offered new deals for the 2015-16 summer.

Mitchell Johnson, Shaun March and Mitchell March were awarded CA contracts for 2015-16.
