Victoria batsman rewarded for a huge season with Bushrangers and Stars
White wins Domestic Player of the Year
Having reclaimed a place in Australia’s Twenty20 line-up earlier in the day, Cameron White enjoyed a double celebration this evening when he was named Domestic Player of the Year at the 2014 Allan Border Medal presentation.
White received more than 30 per cent of the player votes collated to decide the award, to be a clear winner ahead of fellow former Test batsmen Marcus North from Western Australia and last year’s winner Phil Hughes from South Australia.
The 30-year-old,, who handed over the Bushrangers’ captaincy to Matthew Wade at the start of this season after a decade at the helm, has enjoyed a resurgence in form since shedding the responsibilities in both the first-class and one-day arenas.
In the Ryobi Cup domestic 50-overs competition he scored five half-centuries in six games to earn the honour of Player of the Series, with 387 runs at 77.40.
And in the Bupa Sheffield Shield, he plundered 858 runs at an average of 47.67 throughout the 12-month voting period – the most of any player - and took 11 wickets at 23.73.
White becomes just the second Victorian to win the award since it was introduced in 2000, after Rob Quiney earned the honour in 2012.
Prior to that year the award was known as the State Player of the Year, but the introduction of the KFC Big Bash League franchises - that now figure in the voting – led to the change of name.
All Australian-based Cricket Australia, State and Big Bash League contracted players were allocated one vote to select the best player across the three major Australian domestic competitions (Bupa Sheffield Shield, Ryobi Cup and KFC T20 Big Bash League) for the period from 20 January 2013 to 1 January 2014.
