Australia stars pull up stumps

Exhausted players exit pre-season player camp

Australia's fitness camp wrapped up today with 14 tired and sore bodies heading to home ports from the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane for a well-earned rest.

The team finished the training camp with a game of touch footy featuring rugby league Immortal Wally Lewis.

Coach Darren Lehmann said he was impressed with the players' condition, with the squad coming back together after a mix of vacations or Indian Premier League appearances.

"They're sore, they're tired and they're ready to go home, which I like," Lehmann told cricket.com.au.

"They've been fantastic, I've been really impressed with them, the way they've come back, and the guys from the IPL the way they've come straight here.

"It's rare you get a chance to have a group together for two weeks where you can work on their physical side of it – not so much the skill, we had a couple of skills sessions – but really get them ready for a pre-season.

"It's their last one, once we start going it is 18 months on the bounce.

"I'm really pleased where everyone is. I know we don't play until mid-August so we've still got a bit of time off.

"It's about getting everyone up to speed, strength-wise, speed-wise, and starting to work on their skills as we go along."

Ryan Harris, who lives in the Queensland capital, will continue to be a regular visitor at the NCC as he continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery, while James Pattinson headed back to Melbourne early after making good progress in his rehab work for a back condition.

The appearance of 'King Wally' was a big hit with the squad, particularly those from Queensland and NSW backgrounds, with plenty of banter about the State of Origin flowing.

David Warner, restricted to the sideline after rolling his ankle in a drill last week, took over the microphone to provide sideline commentary for cricket.com.au.

It will be a short rest for some of the squad – James Faulkner, Alex Doolan, Phil Hughes and Shaun Marsh return for Australia A duty – while others will link up with their state squads for pre-season drills.

Steve Smith was one of the players feeling tired after an exhausting two weeks where they've pushed – and been pushed – hard.

"I'm feeling a little bit tired (but) hopefully they give us a little bit of time off after this camp and I can unwind in Sydney and then get back into the training again," Smith said.

Nathan Lyon will continue his pre-season training with NSW but will also return regularly to the NCC where he has been working closely with spin coach John Davison.

"I know the (NSW) boys have been putting through the ropes, so it's going to be fun to get back down there and hopefully come back up here to the NCC a couple of times," Lyon said.
