Bupa Sheffield Shield

The evergreen career of Marcus North came to an end in 2014 but not before adding one more item of note to his impressive resume. Leading an inexperienced Warriors batting lineup, North topped the competition’s run-scoring table and took home the Bupa Sheffield Shield player of the year gong, the 34-year-old the main man in the Alcohol. Think Again Western Warriors’ confident start to the 2013/14 season – and three outright wins.

The bowlers came to the party after the BBL break, rolling Tasmania and New South Wales cheaply to climb to the top of the table and hold on for a Shield final berth.

A century to Blues allrounder Moises Henriques, a devastating spell of fast bowling from Josh Hazlewood and persistent rain destroyed the Warriors’ hopes of taking home the four-day title at Manuka Oval, but the experience gained this campaign will hold the young side in good stead for the 2014/15 season.

Ryobi Cup

It was a tough one-day tournament for the Warriors, winning just the one game and struggling for consistency with the bat throughout. Shaun Marsh’s presence was missed in the opening matches, the classy left-hander recovering from a hamstring injury in time to tally 304 runs at 76 across his four matches.

The emergence of Andrew Tye as a legitimate limited overs wicket-taker will also have heartened an under-the-pump WA heirachy.

BBL|03

Craig Simmons smashed the fastest century in BBL history (102 off 42 balls), while Brad Hogg did what he always does: bamboozle batsmen with his unpickable wrong’un and wagging tongue.

After two unsuccessful Big Bash League final appearances, it was a case of third time lucky for Simon Katich’s men, the veteran line-up coming up trumps at home to book the Scorchers a place in September’s T20 Champion’s League.

Western Fury

The Alcohol.Think Again Western Fury missed out on the finals in both the WNCL and WT20, after snapping a 13-year drought in 2012-13, but the continued development of WA’s young brigade has last year’s T20 runners-up eyeing even bigger prizes in 2014/15.

The Fury finished third in the WNCL with a 3-3 record, led by competition Player of the Year Nicole Bolton (371 runs at 61.83 and seven wickets) who made a century in her long-awaited Australia debut this summer. Bolton won the Fury’s Zoe Goss Medal as best player during 2013-14, while teenage fast bowler Piepa Cleary was named Rising Star.
