Ponting-Kallis trophy gaining momentum
Four-Test Proteas series a possibility
Australia and South Africa's next epic Test series could be played over four matches for the Kallis-Ponting trophy.
The two teams, who occupy No.2 and No.1 respectively on the ICC's Test rankings, have staged some memorable games over the past 20 years.
But in the post-apartheid era, the rivalry has always been limited to three-Test battles with the only exception being a two-Test series in 2011.
Cricket South Africa chief Haroon Lorgat confirmed his organisation and Cricket Australia (CA) were in advanced discussions about breaking the trend.
"We are very keen to play a four-Test series against Australia and we've gone some way to agreeing to that," Lorgat said.
"Although it's dependent on the calendar. If we can fit it in, then we will do that."
The sides are next scheduled to square off in Australia over October-November 2016.
Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards was upbeat the two sporting bodies could find space for a four-Test series.
"You've got to recognise the quality of the cricket," Edwards told ESPNcricinfo.
Lorgat and Edwards thrashed out the issue during last week's series decider in Cape Town, and also the prospect of giving the series added gravitas with a new name and proper piece of silverware.
"We initiated it (the discussions) ... Wally was very excited when we chatted at Newlands," Lorgat told South African website sport24.
"There is agreement that we want to enhance the narrative around series between our countries.
"For example, a proper naming of the series like the Kallis-Ponting trophy, is gaining momentum."
