Mumbai Indians have lost their must-win clash against Kolkata Knight Riders to put the defending champions hopes of making the final four teams in serious doubt.

Mumbai's Rohit Sharma top scored for the visitors with 51, and was one of only three batsman to strike at more than a run a ball as Mumbai reached 5-141 in their 20 overs.

Kolkata opener Robin Uthappa hit a career best 80 from 52 balls to make short work of the chase, the Knight Riders reaching their target with six wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.

Further compounding the Mumbai Indians' woe, strike bowler Lasith Malinga now exits the tournament to return to international duty with Sri Lanka on their tour of England.

Both teams kept their Australian contingent benched for this match.
