No.1 batsman and No.4 bowler both Aussies
Finch remains on top of the world
Preview: Men's WT20 semi finals
Opener Aaron Finch remains the No.1 ranked batsmen in the world in the T20 International format after finishing Australia’s disappointing World T20 event as the team’s leading run-scorer, while Mitchell Starc has risen to his highest-ever ranking among bowlers.
The latest update to the ICC T20I Rankings was released on Wednesday, a day after the group stage of the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 came to an end.
Finch scored 158 runs from Australia’s four matches, which included 71 in the side’s only win for the tournament – against host nation Bangladesh.
He also scored 65 in the first-up loss to Pakistan, but has admitted the powerhouse opening partnership between he and David Warner had failed to live up to their own hype.
"I think myself and Davey have both been very disappointing in this tournament as a partnership," Finch said.
"What makes it even more disappointing is that it took until the final game to have a big partnership, (when Australia were) out of the tournament already. To not be able to progress and then provide a good start for the side was very disappointing and something that is frustrating.
"We've both come here with high expectations of each other and ourselves. I don't think we played particularly well in the first three games in such a short format you have to rely on your openers heavily and we didn't do that.
"So we take a lot of responsibility."
England’s Alex Hales has moved up to No.2 on the ICC Batsmen Rankings for T20Is after his unbeaten 116 in England’s thrilling win over Sri Lanka.
Also moving up a place is India’s Virat Kohli, who is now in third place.
Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera and South Africa batsman JP Duminy have made it to the top 10 for the first-time ever.
Perera has risen seven places to fifth, while Duminy has jumped eight places to eighth.
Duminy, who shares the position with Chris Gayle, has scored 142 runs from four matches at an average of 47.33 and a strike rate of 152.68.
Gayle has moved up six places to return to the top 10. He has scored 140 runs from four matches at an average on 35 and a strike rate of 116.66.
Also making a return to the top 10 is Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena. The right-handed batsman has moved up five places and is now ranked 10th.
Meanwhile, West Indies’ leg-spinner Samuel Badree has moved up a place to replace teammate Sunil Narine as the number-one ranked bowler in the ICC Bowler Ranking for T20Is.
Badree is currently the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 10 scalps from four matches, at an average of nine and an economy rate of 5.62.
Starc, who was Australia's leading wicket-taker for the tournament with five, jumped 12 places to be fourth. Sachitra Senanayake is fifth after moving up 19 places and Ravi Ashwin has risen 16 places to a career-high of sixth.
Starc's entry into the top 10 means there are now two pacemen in the top 10, with Nuwan Kulasekara in eighth (up by one) being the only other one.
In relation to the teams, India has moved ahead of Sri Lanka into the number-one position on the ICC T20I Team Rankings table.
India gained seven ratings points to finish on 130, to be on par with Sri Lanka. However, when ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side is ranked higher.
With both India and Sri Lanka having qualified for the semi-finals, both sides have a chance to either retain or reclaim the number-one position.
In the other change in the table, West Indies and Australia have swapped positions.
West Indies is now ranked fifth with a gain of five ratings points and is now on 115. Australia, on the other hand, has moved down a place to sixth with a drop of five ratings points to end on 110.
The WT20 tournament carries a total prize money of US$ 3 million, with the winning side taking home US$ 1.1 million and the runner-up collecting US$ 550,000.
