Squads named for Shield round

Abbott, Starc named in NSW Blues squad

(Scroll down for full round 5 squads)

Sean Abbott and Mitchell Starc have been named to play for NSW Blues in the team’s first outing since the Phillip Hughes tragedy a fortnight ago, despite the pair both missing grade cricket on the weekend after opting not to play.

The Blues have selected a 12-man squad with the players given the option of withdrawing from the match should they feel they are not ready to play.

Each player will be given until the morning of the match to decide whether or not they choose to play, and another player will be called in from a standby group if necessary.

Captain Moises Henriques will make his first Bupa Sheffield Shield appearance of the season in the clash against the myFootDr Queensland Bulls, starting Tuesday at the SCG.

The NSW Blues and Len Lease Breakers players will wear 'PJH 707' on their playing shirts to pay tribute to Hughes, who was the 707th man to don the Baggy Blue cap.

Shaun Marsh will line up for the Alcohol.Think Again Western Warriors against the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers after being released from the Test squad ahead of the series opener in Adelaide.

Marsh scored an unbeaten 134 in WA's abandoned match against Victoria at the MCG two weeks ago, but Warriors coach Justin Langer believes the 31-year-old will be ready to go for his side's clash at the WACA Ground.

"Michael Clarke is the best player in the world and a very determined customer. So Shaun understands that," Langer said on Monday.

"(Shaun) has had great preparation for the Test match, so he'll be dying to play this game against Victoria.

"He loves batting and he's batting so well.

"He'll really be looking forward to playing back here at the WACA against the same guys who he made 130 against."

Aaron Finch will make his first appearance in Shield cricket since being one of the pallbearers at Hughes's funeral, with the Bushrangers batsman to honour his close mate by displaying Baggy Green number 408 on his bat.

Tasmanian Tigers wicketkeeper Tim Paine has been dropped for the state's Shield clash against the West End Redbacks at Blundstone Arena.

Ben Dunk will replace the four-Test gloveman, with Tigers coach Dan Marsh conceding Paine was out of form with the bat.

"It was a very tough decision, his keeping has been outstanding throughout the season, but he hasn't made enough runs with the bat," said Marsh.

"He's not the only one in the top order not making runs but we need more out of him with the bat.

"We want to be making 350 with the bat.

"Ben Dunk went away last week and made a double century in the Futures League after being omitted in the last game."

The Redbacks will be without Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson and Daniel Worrall for the match, while Tom Cooper admitted it has been difficult to deal with the passing of Hughes.

"There's a few people that are raring to go, there's a couple that are still a bit unsure. But I think everyone wants to play for him," he said.

"And it's tough because unlike a physical injury there's no real measure of how you're going. I guess the next four days will show.

"Personally I had a few net sessions and you're a little bit hesitant with that going through your mind.

"The hardest thing, I think Mike Hussey said it last week, there's so much time to think in a game of cricket.

"So when you're out there on your own and you have got all that time to think, to try and keep it out of your head is the main thing."
