Allrounder beats out Test star as NSW's best
Abbott claims Steve Waugh Medal
NSW allrounder Sean Abbott has won the Steve Waugh Medal as the Bupa Sheffield Shield champions' best player of the season.
The award - presented at a ceremony in Sydney on Friday night - takes in the four-day and one-day formats and is voted on by Blues players at the end of each match.
Abbott collected 169 votes to finish eight ahead of one of Australia's Ashes heroes, NSW captain Steve Smith, while opening batsman Ryan Carters was third on 133.
The 22-year-old Abbott picked up 27 wickets in the Shield competition and he was the leading wicket-taker in the RYOBI Cup - which NSW lost in the final to Queensland in October - with 16.
Abbott made some handy runs in the lower order, particularly in the one-day cup where he averaged 32.
Batter Leah Poulton took out the Belinda Clark Medal as NSW's best female cricketer of 2013-14.
Poulton played a key role in delivering the Breakers a ninth straight women's one-day title, with 347 runs at an average of 57.83.
She recorded a total of 205 votes ahead of Erin Osborne (190) and Alyssa Healy (178).
