Park cricketer hits 40 sixes in stunning 307

The Port Augusta Cricket Association played host to a remarkable individual performance on the weekend, when West Augusta B Grade batsman Josh Dunstan scored 307 in a 35-overs-a-side match against Central Stirling.

Making matters all the more impressive, Dunstan hit a ridiculous 40 sixes, while his triple century was 86.72 per cent of his team's total of 354.

To put that into context, the ODI record for the highest percentage of runs in a completed innings is held by Viv Richards, with the Master Blaster smashing 189 not out in 9-272 – equating to 69.48 per cent of his team's total – against England at Old Trafford in 1984.

That record has stood for 33 years, surviving even the contemporary acceleration of one-day scoring rates thanks to the introduction of T20 cricket, but the percentage is well below Dunstan's efforts in South Australia on Saturday.

To say his performance was the standout of the West Augusta innings is akin to suggesting Richards was a passable batsman; five of Dunstan's teammates fell for ducks, the next best score was 18no, and after coming in at 1-10, he scored 307 of the 318 runs that followed.

Incredibly, he put on a 203-run partnership for the seventh wicket with second top scorer Ben Russell, who contributed just five.

For now, Dunstan can dine out on his 15 minutes of fame, a kind comparison with the Master Blaster, and being the toast of West Augusta for some time to come.
