Opener David Warner impresses against Afghanistan with massive score

Records have tumbled in Perth as David Warner punished Afghanistan's bowlers in their Cricket World Cup match at the WACA Ground.

Warner was dismissed in the 38th over for 178 from 133 balls, the highest score by an Australian at a World Cup and the fifth highest in the tournament's history.

He surpassed the previous Australian record of 158 set by Matthew Hayden against West Indies in 2007.

Warner's innings, which included 19 fours and five sixes, is also the third highest score by an Australian in one-day international cricket, just short of Shane Watson's mark of 185 not out scored against Bangladesh in 2011 and Hayden's 181 against New Zealand in 2007.

Warner combined for a 260-run stand with Steve Smith, an Australian ODI record for any wicket, beating the mark set by Watson and Ricky Ponting in 2009.

It is the ninth highest ODI partnership of all time.

Warner took 40 balls to post his fifty and brought up his century from 92 deliveries, before he put his foot down.

He took 24 balls to move from 100 to 150 and all five of his sixes came after he brought up three figures.

He was dismissed chasing his sixth maximum, with Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi hanging onto a difficult high catch off the bowling of Dawlat Zadran.
