Brisbane to host Indoor World Series

Budding junior cricketers from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa converge on Queensland capital

More than 200 of the southern hemisphere's brightest junior indoor cricketers kids will flock to Brisbane for the Junior World Series beginning this Sunday.

Ranging from under 14 to 18 age divisions, teams will play for the right to be crowned the World Indoor Cricket Federation Champion for their age group.

It is the second edition of the WICF's junior world series since, and the first since 2012.

A joint initiative with Cricket Australia, the hosts will field an Australia and Australia A team in the three age groups to compete against teams from New Zealand and South Africa.

The age groups will be 14-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and-under boys and the 18-and-under girls. Australian teams hold all but one of the titles currently.

Indoor Cricket is a shortened version of the outdoor game, neatly packed into 16 overs per side, with rebound nets and specific scoring zones. Players bat in pairs, all players must bowl two overs and dismissals can occur off the nets.

It is fast-paced, energetic and exciting. It also was how many of Australia's Test legends got their first break in the game, including former captains Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke.

Queensland, Hobart Hurricanes and Australia T20 leg-spinner Cameron Boyce is another who got his start indoors.

"You have to be pretty agile and flexible for indoor cricket and the skills are something you can definitely take out to the outdoor game … I really enjoyed indoor cricket," Boyce said.

Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars' Ashes-winning star Jess Jonaseen said her main memory of indoor cricket was it "being so much fun".

"I first started playing indoor cricket before I played outdoor and now if I went back to it I think I'd find it quite challenging," Jonassen said.

CA'sExecutive General Manager – Game and Market Development, Andrew Ingleton, said: "One of indoor cricket's most important features is that it provides more opportunities for players of all ages to be involved with the game of cricket and go on to represent their state."

Previous players

Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting, Steve and Mark Waugh, Steve Smith, Aaron Finch, Ryan Harris, Belinda Clark, Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Kristen Beams, Jess Jonassen and Sarah Coyte, with Coyte representing Australia in the Indoor Open World Series in 2011.
