Debutant achieves Shield first

Travis Dean becomes first man in history to score a century in each innings of Shield debut

Debutant Travis Dean has broken a host of records on his way to helping Victoria to an outright victory in their Sheffield Shield clash against Queensland at the MCG.

The 23-year-old made 154 not out in the first innings and was arguably more impressive in the second as he batted through to make an unbeaten 109 in the nine-wicket win.

Watch: Highlights of Dean's first-innings century

Dean became just the seventh player in the history of first-class cricket to score a century in each innings on debut, joining Australian Arthur Morris, Indian duo Nari Contractor and Virag Awate, Afghanistan's Noor Ali Zadran, Sri Lankan Tharanga Indika and Pakistan's Aamer Malik.

He is the first man to score centuries in each innings of his Sheffield Shield debut, with Morris's performance coming for NSW against Queensland in the summer of 1940-41 when the Shield competition was suspended due to the Second World War.

Dean's total of 263 runs is also the most by any batsmen on first-class debut, eclipsing the 261 runs Indika made for Police Sports Club against Seeduwa Raddoluwa in 2011.

The opener also broke Les Favell's record for the most total runs on Shield debut, the South Australian having posted scores of 86 and 164 against New South Wales in 1951-52.

Dean faced a total of 500 balls across both innings and spent 645 minutes at the crease, and was out in the middle for all 335.2 overs of the match.

His total of 500 deliveries faced is the most by a Shield debutant, smashing David Dawson's mark of 445 for Tasmania in 2004-05.

Quick Single: Dean double leads Vics to Shield win

The superb individual effort seemingly justified the decision by Victorian selectors to select Dean ahead of Australian limited overs specialist Aaron Finch for the match.

Finch, who brushed off his axing with an unbeaten 288 for the CA XI against New Zealand in Sydney this week, was quick to congratulate his young teammate.

Dean has been knocking on the selectors' door for a number of years, having made a total of 1464 runs for Footscray-Edgewater in the last two Premier Cricket seasons.

He posted scores of 217 not out and 63 for Victoria in the Futures League earlier this month.
