Records tumble in England one-day match

A look at the records broken in a remarkable day at Trent Bridge

The record books have been rewritten twice in an astonishing run spree at Nottinghamshire's Trent Bridge ground, which saw a record English one-day partnership and the most aggregate runs scored in a List A match.

By the close in the Royal London One-Day Cup game between Notts and Northamptonshire on Monday, statisticians were checking to see if there had ever been a day like it anywhere in the world.

The big hitting began from the start with Nottinghamshire's Riki Wessels and Michael Lumb sharing a record one-day partnership in England of 342 from 39.2 overs.

Wessels departed for a career-best 146, from 97 balls, while Lumb went on to make 184 as Nottinghamshire posted 445 for eight.

The runs continued to flow when Northamptonshire chased down what would have been another record for a team batting second. But they fell 20-runs short despite 128 from Rory Kleinveldt.

Afterwards Lumb joked: "It was a bit twitchy. What a great game of cricket. Never in doubt.

"I was surprised they took it that deep but it's credit to them. Rory Kleinveldt was unbelievable. It was an unbelievable game. I don't think we could do too much more. I'm proud of all the boys."

Here are the astonishing numbers from the match:

870 The number of runs accumulated in a North Group match of England’s domestic one-day tournament between Nottinghamshire (445) and Northamptonshire (425), the second highest match aggregate in List A cricket and highest outside international cricket. The record is 872, compiled by Australia (434) and South Africa (438) in the famous one-day international at the Wanderers in 2006. It is also first time that both Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire registered a 400-plus total in List A cricket.

445- The number of runs scored by Nottinghamshire, making it the second highest team total in limited overs cricket only behind Surrey’s 4-496 against Gloucestershire at the Oval in 2007. The previous second highest total in List A matches was 9-443 by Sri Lanka against Netherlands at Amstelveen in 2006.

425 – The number of runs Northamptonshire posted in reply of 445, the fourth instance of team losing the match despite scoring 400-plus runs in List A cricket. The highest is 434 by Australia against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2006 whereas the second highest is 429 by Glamorgan against Surrey at the Oval in 2007. The other such instance is 411 by Sri Lanka against India at Rajkot in 2009.

35 – The number of sixes hit in the match (18 by Notts and 17 by Northants), the second most maximums in a limited-overs game and just three short of the world record 38 sixes between Australia and India at Bangalore in 2013.

342 – The partnership between Notts opening pair Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels, the highest ever in limited-overs cricket in England, going past 318 by Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly for India against Sri Lanka at Taunton in World Cup 1999. It's also third highest in all limited-overs cricket, just behind 367* scored byMorne van Wayk and Cameron Delport for Dolphins against Knights at Bloemfontein in 2004 and the 372 between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels for West Indies against Zimbabwe at Canberra in the 2015 World Cup.

45 – The number of balls taken by Northants’ Rory Kleinveldt to reach his hundred, the second fastest ton by a batsman coming to bat at number seven or below in List A cricket. The fastest is off 44 balls by Mark Ealham for Kent against Derbyshire at Maidstone in 1995.

184 – The runs amassed by Nottinghamshire’s opening batsman Michael Lumb, the highest individual innings for the county surpassing 167 not out by Paul Johnson against Kent at Trent Bridge in 1993.

146 – The runs scored by Riki Wessels, the fourth highest individual innings by a wicketkeeper batsman in England’s domestic one-day cricket. Just two wicketkeepers – Alec Stewart (twice) and Jonathan Batty, both for Surrey - have scored 150-plus in List A games in England.

1 – It was first time that both the Nottinghamshire opening batsmen – Lumb and Wessels - scored hundreds in the same innings in limited overs cricket. Surprisingly, overall it was 135th instance of openers hitting hundred in the same List A innings.
